The story of Rick and Dick Hoyt is not new to me. I have been doing triathlons and Ironman triathlons for many years now. They are both true inspirations to those who are involved in the sport.
The story goes like this:
Son asked his father, “Dad, will you take part in a marathon with me?” The father who, despite having a heart condition, says “Yes”. They went on to complete the marathon together. Father and son went on to join other marathons. The father always saying “Yes” to his son’s request of going through the race together. One day, the son asked his father, “Dad, let’s join the Ironman together.”
To which, his father said “Yes”.
For those who don’t know, Ironman is the toughest triathlon ever. The race encompasses three endurance events of a 2.4 mile (3.86 kilometer) ocean swim, followed by a 112 mile (180.2 kilometer) bike ride and ending with a 26.2 mile (42.195 kilometer) marathon along the coast of the Big Island, Hawaii. It is THE ironman of Ironmans.
Father and son went on to complete the race together!
Now this is an incredible story BUT add the fact that the father is swimming the 3.8km pulling is son in a boat, biking the 180km bike with his son on the handle bars and pushing his son in a wheelchair for the marathon portion.
You see, his son is handicapped and cannot walk or talk on his own. BUT you can see the PURE JOY in his eyes when they are racing together. Rick told his father, “Dad, when I’m running, it feels like I’m not handicapped.”
I have done 2 Ironman races and they are not only physically challenging but mentally challenging as well. It is extremely hard to get yourself through all three disciplines without adding more weight, more balance and more emotion. I will forever believe that these 2 men will inspire and change the way people look at the world.
If you have ever felt like a challenge is too big or that you cannot do something, just watch this video, wipes the tears from your eyes and believe you CAN!
